| Originally the site of the Shanghai racecource
(Gambling was so popular that by the 1920s the Shanghai
Race Club was the 3rd wealthiest corporation in China).
It later became a sports arena, then a camp for prisoners
in the war, then a mortuary (for dead bodies), then it
was concreted over for military parades then turned into
Renmin Park and Square. The race course clock tower is
the only original thing left. The bomb shelters have become
shopping malls.
